For some people, putting in a zipper is the most daunting task when it comes to sewing. If you don't know what you're doing, it can be extremely time consuming. Keep the needle on the left-hand side and sew on the right side of the seam.  Then you just have to slide the fabric under the presser foot, backstitch, and start sewing the other side.
