A Mysterious Obelisk in the Desert

The desert is a very mysterious place, and we still know very little about it. Of course, we know that intense weather patterns and erosion cause cliffs and rocks to form weird and wonderful shapes, but how do you explain things like this? This is an obelisk that was found in the Utah desert, but where did it come from? And how did it come to be such a shape?

It looks extremely menacing, especially as it seems to be the only tall structure in what looks like a deep valley. Plus, the dark skies on the horizon make it look even more ominous.
