A Hematite Found in the Desert

The desert may seem like a deserted landscape, but there's so much that you can see in the desert if you look hard enough. That's because these places are home to countless mineral deposits and unusual rocks - including this creepy-looking object that one desert explorer found in Egypt. At first glance, they wondered whether they had stumbled upon a meteorite that had fallen from the sky and into the sand below.

Upon inspection, though, they realized that this was a hematite crystal. Hematite is made largely of iron, and while it looks black, it can also look red - which is why it's often called the blood stone.
