Positioned between Venice and Lido, Poveglia Island conceals a shroud of chilling stories and secrets. Once a dreaded mental institution where crude lobotomies were performed, it also doubled for over a century as a quarantine for contagious diseases. This tiny island is strictly off-limits to visitors, which adds to its scary and mysterious reputation. Only in very rare cases do photographers, writers, and TV producers get permission to explore it.
Although it's hard to gain access to this haunted island, if you can manage it, it's worth a visit. It's definitely at the top of the list of creepiest places around the world.
