Get a Free Upgrade by Swapping Rooms

It's a lesser-known fact that hotels usually assign guests the first room that's ready. So even if you can't negotiate an upgrade, you can often swap to another room if there's something you don't like. For instance, are the taps broken, or are there stains on the bed sheets? A change of room can be a fresh start. After all, you want to begin your vacation knowing that you'll be comfortable for the rest of your stay.
